MEMORANDUM NO. 2022-016
TO : All PDA Members, Chapter/Affiliate Presidents and Integrated Organizations
FROM : PDA Data Privacy Committee
DATE : October 12, 2022
SUBJECT : DATA PRIVACY ACT OF 2012
Greetings!
In 2012, our country passed into law the Republic Act No. 10173, “An Act Protecting Individual Personal Information in Information and Communications Systems in the Government and the Private Sector, creating for this Purpose a National Privacy Commission, and for other purposes,” otherwise known as the “Data Privacy Act of 2012”. This law mandates protecting the fundamental human rights of privacy and communication while ensuring the free flow of information to promote innovation and growth. (RA 10173, Ch. 1, Sec. 2). It is also meant to cover both natural and juridical persons involved in the processing of personal information.
With this in mind, the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) urges ALL of its members to handle each patient’s information carefully. Being good stewards of our patients’ personal information is part of our duty and responsibility as dental professionals, in addition to attending to our patients’ needs for oral health care.
Please be informed that the National Privacy Commission (NPC) is the sole government agency in authority under the said law. The NPC is available to give seminars to different dental chapters with regards to the Data Privacy Act. For any assistance, direct your concerns to our PDA Data Privacy Committee Chairman, Dr. Jonas G. Añonuevo, at 09228299039.
Let’s make the welfare of our patients our top priority at all times.
Sincerely yours,
DR. JONAS G. AÑONUEVO
